Brief history Using a pole to exercise originated from the traditional Indian sport of mallakhamb. It uses principles of strength and endurance using a vertical wooden pole or rope. Travelling circuses and sideshows in the 1920s used dancing with a pole in the middle of a tent. It was not until the 1990s that pole dancing began to be taught as a performance art and fitness exercise. Since the mid 2000s, promoters of pole dance fitness competitions have been trying to change peoples’ perception of pole dance and to promote it as a competitive form of dance and acrobatics. Since then, pole dancing classes have become a popular form of competitive and recreational sport. Controversial sport Based on an article from The Guardian, although pole fitness is the respectable face of pole dancing with ambitions of inclusion in the Olympics, the fitness trend still has an image problem.
