Is Sugar addiction our fate?

Each and every day you are ingesting a substance that increases cholesterol, raises glucose, contributes to aging, and creates unstable moods and triggers inflammation. Can you guess what I am talking about? It couldn’t be more basic than SUGAR!

In her book Molecules of Emotion Candace B. Pert states, “I consider sugar to be a drug, a highly purified plant that can become addictive. Relying on an artificial form of glucose—-sugar—to give us a quick pick me up is analogous to, if not as dangerous as, shooting heroin.”

I know what you are thinking: “Our bodies need sugar to survive.” And you are right. The one chemical the brain is dependent on to function is glucose. But your body does in fact produce its own glucose. And would continue to do so without ingesting it artificially. The problem is that ingesting too much sugar desensitizes the cell receptors and disrupts the body’s own feedback loop that regulates sugar production. And as a result, we need more and more sugar for even the most basic functions.

Have you ever tried to go without sugar? Watch as your energy is depleted and your head begins to ache in pain. These symptoms are actually a reaction to DRUG WITHDRAWAL! Its takes anywhere from 3 to 7 days to deplete the body of its sugar reserves and to switch to using its own energy (i.e. fat or even its own glucose).

Do you ever notice how your moods change based on whether or not you have eaten? When you go without sugar, the brain creates a signal that it’s time to be fed. Not because you are lacking nutrients, but because you are lacking the sugars. The more sugar you are used to consuming, the more severe the response. Hypoglycemia and diabetes are both conditions that can be cured through diet and the management of SUGAR! There is a high and a low that happens from eating sugar and your moods are the victim!

Your body is made to survive on fat and protein, but if you eliminated both of those and only lived off of sugars (i.e. carbohydrates) you would not survive! When you consume sugar in any form, insulin is triggered as a means to break down the sugar. When you combine a high fat meal with lots of sugars or even carbohydrates, the insulin response is triggered. When there is too much insulin in the blood it cannot be filtered out. As a result, the fat and sugars become STORED IN YOUR CELLS AS FAT! In contrast, when you eat protein or fat, very minute levels of insulin are triggered if at all because it is not necessary for processing protein and fat. That is why eating fat alone will not lead to fat on the body. Don’t be fooled people! The insulin reaction to sugars in combination with fat is what leads to high cholesterol – not the fat alone!

Did you know that one of the fastest and most effective ways to age yourself is to eat sugar? Sugar, as a part of its metabolic process, leaves an ash in the body that breaks down the cells in things like proteins. A good example of this is collagen. Collagen is protein, and when the synthesis of amino acids is thwarted, collagen production is reduced, causing more rapid aging.

And of course last but not least is what sugar does to your joints. The body and its immune system have a magnificent way of filtering what comes in. Just like your body responds to viruses and bacteria as an invasion, it also responds to certain foods in the same way. The immune system views sugar as a cellular destructive threat, and responds by reacting with inflammation. This inflammation creates swelling, soreness, tightness and pain. Sugar is one of the best ways to trigger your body’s inflammatory response because your immune system views sugar as a pathogen!
